Spa Review: Guerlain Spa, One & Only the Palm Dubai

It’s no secret – the One & Only at the Palm is one of my favourite hotels in Dubai. I love its understated design aesthetic and the superlative luxury you encounter, whether you’re staying, dining, pedicure-ing (it is home to one of only two Bastien Gonzalez studios in Dubai, or, in this case, spa-ing.

The recent marriage between French luxury beauty brand Guerlain and the hotel led to the spa being re-branded as Dubai’s first Guerlain spa. The spa – which was already rather nice – has gone through some subtle retouching to match the Guerlain’s strict standards, and introduced a completely new treatment menu, including a couple of signature treatments exclusive to the Dubai spa.

But I was in need of a facial, so opted to try the indulgent Orchidée Impériale Prestige treatment. The spa, with its bubbling water features, and soothing neutral colour schemes, envelops you in tranquillity from the minute you walk in.

Feeling suitably soothed, a refreshing cold towel and delicious welcome drink later, I was ushered into the treatment room which has its own changing area, so no detour via the locker rooms required. After a pre-treatment foot bath and quick analysis of my skin to decide exactly which products to use, my therapist got to work. While this follows a standard cleanse-tone-exfoliate-steam-mask-moisturise facial protocol, it is the quality of products and finesse in technique that sets the experience apart.

The top-of-the-line Orchidée Impériale product range harnesses the power of rare orchids to offer rich, nourishing, anti-ageing skincare, which I could feel my skin thirstily soaking in, as the serum, cream and mask were applied in various stages in the treatment. The highlight is a luxuriously long facial massage with a creamy mask, using unique strokes that were incredibly calming. The mask is left in for a while, during which time I also got to enjoy a hand and foot massage.

In fact, the treatment felt almost as relaxing as a full body massage – and that’s saying a lot, for a massage junkie like me! But the proof was in the pudding (read: my face), which looked and felt visibly brighter and softer. Now, to try and maintain the effects for as long as I can, in our air-conditioned summer environment!

Inside tip: There is a well-stocked Guerlain makeup counter in the spa reception, perfect for some post-treatment touching up if you’re heading out after. But, if like me, you’re having a facial, then it’s best to head straight home and hibernate, to leave the products on the skin for a couple of hours at least.
