I’ve always felt that Greek cuisine is one of the most under-represented in Dubai. Not anymore, with quite a few Hellenic concepts opening up, but for unmistakable authenticty, you can’t go wrong with Mythos Kouzina & Grill in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (from the same management who brought us Elia, the only Greek restaurant in town for the longest time).
Mythos is that rare Dubai restaurant that not only ticks all the boxes when it comes to good food, friendly service and a charming atmosphere, but the best bit – it’s a licensed restaurant, but with an independent (read: not hotel-like) vibe.
Tucked away at the lower (park) level in Cluster P of JLT, the cosy venue instantly transports you to a taverna on a Greek island – it’s all rustic Cycladic-style walls, shabby chic furniture, retro lightbulbs, and striking flooring featuring handmade tiles from Crete, awash with the quintessentially Greek colours blue and white. The food is authentic to match. The easy-to-navigate menu, designed for sharing, includes all the taverna classics from a more-ish tzatziki dip and taramosalata (fish roe dip), to street-food dishes such as souvlaki (skewered meat) and gyros (pita bread wraps), done the way they are meant to be. Their tomato kefta (a delicious fried and stuffed tomato dish) is a must-try. And we recommend leaving room for dessert – although, if you’re anything like us, you’re likely to be quite stuffed halfway through the meal, having over-ordered! Baklava and Greek yoghurt with honey are the obvious choices, but the Galaktoboureko, which came highly recommended, a filo pastry and vanilla custard confection, is just divine.
Along with the adjacent New Orleans-inspired Nola, the buzzing restaurant is proof of the fact that the trend of relaxed, unpretentious venues offering quality food, is here to stay!
